Audience at their best behaviour

May 2023

Having your own cheerleader at your side at all times is not such a bad idea. Someone who encourages and motivates you when things get tough is worth their weight in gold. When you have to perform, positive encouragement has an effect on your performance. It also works the other way around. During presentations or pitches, even the smallest negative signals can affect your performance. Think of latecomers, a disinterested look at a phone or a strange smile. It can completely take your concentration away. It’s time for a round of public etiquette. Because how do you behave as an audience?

Turn on your curiosity

Be open to the speaker, be surprised and actively participate. You are going to learn something, be inspired. With your phone on mute and an open mind, this makes you feel more comfortable with the story. Believe us, that has a direct effect on the speaker. Your encouragement contributes to a successful presentation, win-win!

Have a question ready

Is the speaker finishing? Then don’t be surprised by the question of questions. “Are there any questions?” Be prepared – hello introverts among us – and think about it during the presentation, because there is a good chance that you will still have something to ask. This interest has a great effect on the speaker and the audience.

“You didn’t like it but you loved it? Stand up! Stamp your feet, whistle your fingers and whoop”
