Public speaking is not always easy, but it becomes even more challenging when you are angry, frustrated, or sad.

When emotions run high, your ability to communicate consciously decreases. You listen less effectively, react more quickly and instinctively, and risk saying something you might later wish you had expressed differently. That is unfortunate, because when important issues are at stake, your words carry significant weight.

Emotions Are Not the Problem

The first instinct may be to try to suppress emotions as much as possible. To remain professional, free from those uncomfortable feelings that come with difficult situations. But emotions are not the problem. In fact, emotions give meaning to what we have to say. A story without emotion often remains superficial. This applies to both positive and negative messages.

The real challenge is not feeling emotions, but what happens when emotions take control. When you are angry, you are more likely to become defensive. Feeling nervous? You may start speaking too quickly. The key is not to eliminate emotions, but to create space between what you feel and what you say.

TIPS!

After a presentation, your audience will probably not remember exactly what you said. They will, however, remember your message and how it made them feel. Because emotions have such a strong influence on your message, we would like to help you keep it clear and focused. Without phrases like “you always…” or “here we go again”, but with a clear message and the right tone.

#1 Take a Pause

Most communication problems do not arise from bad intentions, but from thoughtless, impulsive reactions. When tension rises, responding immediately often feels natural. Yet the real strength lies in taking a brief pause. Take a breath, reflect, and determine what you actually want to achieve. Those few seconds can make the difference between reacting emotionally and responding consciously.

#2 Stay Focused on Your Message

When emotions intensify, there is a good chance you will lose track of your original point. Before you know it, the conversation is no longer about what you actually wanted to say. Make sure you know your core message beforehand and keep returning to it.

#3 Emotions Are Welcome, but You Are in Control

Are you feeling tension, sadness, or perhaps joy? That is perfectly okay. Acknowledging what you feel can create connection. A simple sentence such as “I notice that this really affects me” gives your audience insight into you as a speaker and helps them understand you better.

There is, however, a difference between speaking with emotion and speaking from emotion. In the first case, your feelings support your message. In the second, emotions take over completely and you lose control. In your ideal story, you do not avoid emotions; instead, you ensure that your message remains intact even when emotions run high.

Learn Something from Our National Team Coach

The match has barely ended, and the national team coach is already standing in front of the cameras. Whether the team won or lost, whether it was a great game or felt incredibly unfair, does not matter. The coach still has to explain what happened and where there is room for improvement.

Does our national coach inspire the most confidence when all emotion is removed from the story? Or are it the moments when emotion is shown that stay with us? When you show what moves you while still remaining calm, you make the greatest impression on your audience.

So, if you find yourself standing in front of a group and emotions catch you off guard, give yourself a moment. Take a breath and try to return to your core message. After all, that is what your presentation is meant for. Not to respond as quickly as possible, or to deliver your story like a robot, but to communicate your message in the way you intended. Especially when emotions are running high.

See you!

Happy Good Talk gives you 3 tips for staying on message when emotions run high Have you ever stood in front of a group when you had bad news to deliver?
